Monday Musings: Audiobooks

I’ll be the first to admit that I never quite understood the appeal of audiobooks. Why spend the time listening to a book when you could just read it? How do you even focus on listening to an audiobook while doing other things?

Then I was hit with a 1,5+ commute and music wasn’t cutting it anymore – wasn’t keeping the drive interesting enough. So, I signed up for a free Audible trial and snagged one of my favorite books to give it a shot.

Suddenly, that commute wasn’t nearly as boring anymore.

Even now, with that commute drastically shortened after moving, I find myself having audiobooks on in the background during the workday. Even now, as I write this, the sequel to that favorite book is being narrated to me, and I have no idea how I’m able to write this while also fully comprehending these narrated words.

Needless to say, my original opinion has shifted considerably, and the appeal isn’t lost to me.

This, of course, brings up the question of how to merge this with my writing. Do I go down the rabbit hole and look into getting an audiobook made for my book Demon Whispers, and its upcoming sequel? Is there any interest in that?

I’m definitely considering it and would love to hear what you all have to say as I research options.

In the meantime, have a great week!

Demon Whispers (The Survival Chronicles, Book 1) is available on Amazon in Kindle and paperback.

  1. I’ve enjoyed audiobooks for a very specific purpose since I’ve been a child – I fall asleep to them. Like you (I’d imagine) if forced to choose audiobooks forever or book-books forever, I’d always choose the latter. It’s easy to think just inside our own realm of experience, but having your books in an audio format would open them up to a great number of people for whom they might not be accessible otherwise (think people with dyslexia or other learning difficulties, ADHD, visually impaired folks, etc.) That’s a whole other audience to potentially love your books :)!
(Hope you’re doing well, by the way)!

    • That’s totally valid! I don’t know if I could fall asleep to them; I’d be so worried about how much I’d miss and finding which point I’d fallen asleep at. But I can absolutely see how listening to an audiobook would be a way to relax and fall asleep.

That’s definitely part of my consideration. I would love to make my books available to as many people as possible.

I am doing well! How have you been?

Let me know what you think!
